Abstract

This book covers topics relevant to the concept of infrastructure construction, including key requirements of development such as measuring productivity and maintenance. It presents different categories of sustainability maintenance of critical infrastructures. In addition, it presents a complex simulation model, the reconfiguration simulator, which enables evaluation of the effectiveness of resilience enhancement strategies for electric distribution networks and the required resources to implement them. Then, it discusses health services as a critical sector in this field, which should be able to perform its function, even in times of crisis. The last chapter presents a brief review of different bridges, including the processes of design, material selection, construction, and maintenance.

Abstract

Transport connects people, places and cities. Investment in transport infrastructure therefore helps bridging economic and social divides. It promotes economic growth and catching up of regions by providing access to jobs for workers and markets for firms. This report summarises evidence on the benefits of transport investment for economic growth and job creation and thereby for catching up in OECD regions.

Abstract

Across the Chinese borderlands, investments in large-scale transnational infrastructure such as roads and special economic zones have increased exponentially over the past two decades. Based on long-term ethnographic research, 'Borderland infrastructures' addresses a major contradiction at the heart of this fast-paced development: small-scale traders have lost their historic strategic advantages under the growth of massive Chinese state investment and are now struggling to keep their businesses afloat. Concurrently, local ethnic minorities have become the target of radical resettlement projects, securitization, and tourism initiatives, and have in many cases grown increasingly dependent on state subsidies. At the juncture of anthropological explorations of the state, border studies, and research on transnational trade and infrastructure development, 'Borderland infrastructures' provides new analytical tools to understand how state power is experienced, mediated, and enacted in Xinjiang and Yunnan. In the process, Rippa offers a rich and nuanced ethnography of life across China's peripheries.

Abstract

"In the long-shadow of September 11, 2001, infrastructures have undergone a significant reorganization. Letters, Power Lines, and Other Dangerous Things examines how new fears and worries over security have transformed the material and social outlines of infrastructure. The book follows three infrastructures-the postal system, freight rail, and the electric power system-and documents the subtle and explicit changes that have remade these systems. The book places the rise of "critical infrastructure protection"-a buzzword, a governing logic, and a multi-billion dollar funding priority-within a larger historical framework. Drawing from thousands of pages of regulatory filings, court documents, and other governmental documents, the book pieces together a larger story about risk and infrastructure. It identifies the political origins of infrastructure vulnerability-demonstrating how decades of political and economic restructuring ("deregulation") created system that were both politically unaccountable and vulnerable to systemic failure; and it examines how a cross-section of actors-including workers, civic groups, city councils, bureaucrats, and others-attempted to leverage new fears about infrastructure danger into reinvigorated systems of public accountability. Put another way, it examines the social and technical processes that made infrastructure dangerous; and then follows the ways in which these "dangerous things" were made safe and secure. The book offers a reminder that infrastructures always order they organize different publics, uses, ideas about what and who a system is for, into a tentative hierarchy. And security presents an opportunity to revisit and in some case remake these orders. The book provides a window into how infrastructures are made and remade sometimes in surprising and contradictory ways"--

Abstract

Abstract

"Infrastructural Brutalism explores the necropolitics of infrastructure through the lens of artistic media: "drowned town" literature, road movies, energy landscape photography, and "death train" narratives. How does American "drowned town" literature, from Mud on the Stars to Sugaree Rising, contribute to the social erasure of Indigeneity? How does road movie scholarship ignore the materiality of the road in favor of modes of travel? How is agency depicted in the energy landscape photography of oil pipelines and coal-powered reactors? How do the novels and films about death trains, from the historical trains of African colonization and the Holocaust to fictional trains such as Snowpiercer and Train to Busan, connect infrastructure with necropower? While most examples are from North American literature, film, and photography, the book also discusses media from around the world in terms of the necropolitical valences of infrastructure.
